Seeing Philadelphia Like a Local


Being a social media geek, the first thing I want to know when I visit a city is where the bloggers are and find out what they say is cool.  Say what you will about bloggers, but they usually know what is going on and what is worth doing and seeing in town.

Annie Heckenberger from the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) knew just what I was looking to find.  The GPTMC has an official Website with all of the usual fare, but they also have a blog called “uWishuNU, Philly from the inside out.”  This blog is written by GPTMC staffers and people from the local community.

In their own words:

“Here at uwishunu, we’re all about Philly–the cool places, the real deals, the insider scoops. It’s an exciting time to be in Philadelphia, and we want to help you to get in on the action.”

And you can find some great stuff there.  For instance, site contributor Carrie writes about a cool Japanese house and Garden called Shofuso, a perfect place to get away from the bustle of the conference.

If you want to try a Philly tradition, the BYOB restaurant, there is a whole category of places to visit if you are interested.

Or how about dropping by Claudio’s and getting some fresh mozzarella cheese? It’s made daily.

Social media helps us go far beyond the two-dimensional view of a place.  By all means, be sure to get a cheesesteak, I certainly plan to get one, but don’t forget that there is so much more to Philly.
