Following Up After the First Interview

My experience as the manager of the PRSA Jobcenter has given me a 360 degree view of what can help you land that job. Although I’m not a human resources expert, I have seen recent success stories and tactics that can help job seekers compete more effectively.

A friend recently asked me if she should contact a potential employer regarding her recent interview. This was her third interview with the same company. I found myself asking her to show them what she’s bringing to the table other than just her resume and cover letter. This conversation illustrates the dilemma that many job seekers encounter after an interview. Consider utilizing these suggestions for following up regarding the status of an interview (think ARTS):

APR+M Delivers Lasting Value to Military PA Professionals

The new APR+M credential provides an important new tool for military public affairs professionals to both develop their skills and demonstrate high proficiency in military communications activities.  However, it transcends those benefits. The APR (Accreditation in Public Relations) is the oldest, most recognized communications credential — valued by public, private and government sectors in the selection of trusted counsel to organizational leaders. Accreditation is not only recognized by military PA leaders, but it can be helpful to those who may want to pursue a public relations career after leaving active duty and for Reserve or National Guard military public affairs personnel trying to advance their civilian careers.

Boomerang Pink Slips

Did you hear about the daily newspaper employees who were told that their positions were being redefined, that they would have to apply for their jobs all over again and that by the time the reorganizational musical chairs stopped, 70 of them would be unemployed. Who could make this up? Staffers at The Journal News, a Westchester daily owned by Gannett, just lived through this nightmare.

This is definitely one of the harsher stories floating around. However, after we all finish shaking our heads in sympathy, there’s a question we need to ask ourselves: “If this involved us, would we be hired?”
