Having recently graduated from Northeastern University, I was excited when I was asked to attend the 2011 International Conference in Orlando, Fla. I have done internships in the past and gone to a few client events, but the idea of working at a PRSA event with hundreds of PR pros is exciting. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to network with top professionals from all over the world at the opening night party and even luckier to get to hear keynoters and sessions presenters speak.

Oh, the wondrous things we have! We can access so many new electronic tools, gadgets and mobile applications to make our media relations efforts more productive. However, can email ever replace a face-to-face conversation? Can a Facebook page convey the interplay of emotions at a live news conference? How can 140 characters explain the complexity of health care policy or do it without the cynicism that too often creeps into pithy, short bites?
In order to engage reporters, we should not give up our YouTube channels, LinkedIn accounts or Flickr photos. They all are part of the arsenal that media relations professionals use to help tell clients’ stories. However, I do think it is time to refocus ― social media is a means to the end, and not the end goal itself.

It turns out that at the very moment we were attending this session, thousands of Californians were being evacuated from their homes. The Red Cross was sending out messages via Twitter, telling people where they could find shelter and what they needed to do. They also were using their regular channels, including a purpose-built blog, as well as local radio and television. But even local media were turning to social media platforms to get the word out.
Gerald Baron is CEO and Founder of AudienceCentral, which makes the online crisis management software Public Information Emergency Response (PIER), and is also the author of the blog CrisisBlogger and the book Now Is Too Late 2, was the session presenter.
Building Trust in a Crisis
Baron said that you have to do two things during a crisis situation to build trust:
- Do the right things
- Communicate them well
Communicating well includes getting the word out fast; communicating directly; and communicating honestly and transparently.
