“Groundswell” of Support for Charlene Li

Posted by Michael Smith in October 25th 2010

I noticed that Charlene Li’s was the most cited name by PRSA attendees in the Tweet Cloud just after “PR” and “Social.” Clearly she made an impression.

“Create your social networks internally first,” said Li at the closing keynote. “Find your voice.”

Charlene Li has always been a “good get” in public relations circles. Forrester is perhaps the best industry analyst firm, and Li, Josh Bernoff and Jeremiah Owyang once comprised a triumvirate of analysts you wanted to “get” for a client or your company. Now she and Owyang have started Altimeter Group on their own.

Localization and Media Targeting Prove Right for Washington

Posted by Michael Smith in October 16th 2010

Politico is a new model for journalism, and thus, for public relations people. Joel Albritton owns our ABC affiliated station WJLA, and other media properties. So here’s what happened as Albritton Communications snuck up on everyone and now dominates this media market:

  • NewsChannel 8 — Albritton started a 24-hour LOCAL cable station, NewsChannel 8, recently rebranded as TBD (to be determined). The cable station launched Washington Business Tonight” and mixed local sources, federal and business leaders. It started the localization model for broadcast media.

Welcome to Washington — PR Capital of the World

Posted by Michael Smith in October 16th 2010

As a native Washingtonian, 25-year veteran of its largest agencies and former association executive on Capitol  Hill, let me be among the first to welcome PRSA International to Washington, D.C.

There was once a sign at Reagan National Airport that said: “Welcome to the Most Powerful City in the World.” So access to power becomes the currency of many of our clients!

PRSA-NCC is among the largest Chapters. Public relations practitioners really network here and try to help one another in the profession. We become friends and friendly competitors. I hope PRSA attendees can feel the vibe and maybe absorb what makes our city so great. We’re all political junkies, many are service oriented at associations and nonprofits, some are K Street killers.

PRSA Experts Share Wisdom and Advice

Posted by Michael Smith in November 11th 2009

On the final day of the PRSA 2009 International Conference, dozens of industry vets and new media experts provided tips and support for mid-career or senior professionals. Meet the Experts was a forum for exchanging ideas and perhaps drawing conclusions from exciting PRSA programming.

Katie Paine, CEO and founder, KDPaine & PartnersKatie Paine talked about measurement, assisting both a public relations executive who had just moved over to public relations from the St. Petersburg Times to a religious organization, and a hospital public relations manager. The Lutheran Church wants to be careful about social media. The Baptist hospital has several constituencies, including doctors who want to provide online counsel without a formal diagnosis.

“Community Organizing” and Public Relations: How to Build Face-to-face Communications

Posted by Michael Smith in September 28th 2009

The first job President Barack Obama had out of college was community organizer for labor unions and other civic groups on the south side of Chicago.

President Obama used grassroots community organization techniques — Saul Alinsky-style organizing tactics – for union votes, neighborhood improvement and for lobbying city hall in Chicago. Most of these efforts involved “turning people out”: whether at the union hall, the church steps or the polling place. Delivering people to precincts is what David Axelrod, now the president’s chief democratic policy strategist, does best.
