The Value of Participation: PRSA 2009 International Conference

Posted by Casey DeLorme in October 23rd 2009

A few weeks ago I wrote about finding YouTube videos of Conference presenters to decide which ones you want to attend. You have schedule allotments for eight workshops, which you have to select from 80+ possibilities.

In reply, someone e-mailed a poignant question:

“I tried your YouTube workshop evaluation idea. For one of the speakers there was a whole workshop available. If I can YouTube the workshop, what is the value in attending the Conference?”

$25K of Professional Development, Beaches & a Piggyback Ride (PRSA 2009 International Conference)

Posted by Casey DeLorme in October 9th 2009

Short post this round ’cause our Conference co-chairs, Marisa Vallbona, APR, and Denis Wolcott, do the talking in this delightful video. Definitely worth the five minutes for its sunny beaches and cuteness alone.

Highlights

  1. Announcing Bob Garfield, the Conference’s third keynote speaker. Bob writes for Advertising Age and co-hosts NPR’s “On the Media.” He just published a book arguing that the long-standing, two-way partnership between advertising and content is due for a “violent rejiggering.” Learn more at Bob’s own post to this blog, The Chaos Scenario.

Thank Heaven For YouTube: Selecting Just Eight of 80+ Possible 2009 International Conference Workshops

Posted by Casey DeLorme in September 25th 2009

Because they have the marquee speaking roles, we’ll hear plenty about Arianna Huffington and Todd Buchholz appearing at the PRSA 2009 International Conference: Delivering Value.

Huffington is known for her politically-influential Huffington Post blog, books and presence on National Public Radio’s “Left, Right, & Center” political roundtable.

Buchholz was a director of economic policy to President George H.W. Bush (W’s daddy). Since, he’s been a top-selling author, speaker, columnist and commentator on all things economic. He has also taught economics at Harvard and is a 2009 fellow at Cambridge University. Oh, and he is managing director of a $15 billion hedge fund. For more, see Buccholtz’s official bio. He’s reportedly quite the speaker.

Digging Through the Value: Exploring Opportunities in Public Relations… and San Diego!

Posted by Casey DeLorme in September 16th 2009

PRSA 2009 International Confernce brochure pages

Staring at Sept. 25 “early bird” Conference registration deadline ($200 discount), I started leafing through the 40-page Conference brochure.

Forty pages?!

Even after you tear off the front and back covers and weed out the obligatory “San Diego Is Paradise” page (though it’s true), the letter from the Conference chairs (who do deserve major thanks for their efforts), and the two pages listing everyone who lent a hand (them, too), you’re still left with 30+ pages.

So I tried whittling it down with math.

PRSA 2009 International Conference: 50 Sculptures, 3 Museums, 1 Aircraft Carrier, 7 Ships and 2 Submarines in a One-mile Radius

Posted by Casey DeLorme in September 4th 2009

San Diego dwtn map artIn our continuing exploration of the fun side (as opposed to the learning/networking side) of the Conference, I wanted to take a moment to show just how much entertainment/culture exists within walking distance of the Conference hotel (The San Diego Marriot Hotel & Marina). Last week’s San Diego photo tour mentioned our downtown is packed with public art.

Today, map- and photo- based proof.

First, I drew a hotel-centered 1-mile radius circle on our Downtown Public Art Guide Map (downloadable PDF). Within that circle, I count 50 pieces of public art ranging from whimsical to memorial, as well as numerous galleries and several performing arts theaters. Additionally, there are TWO major motion picture theaters (1 & 2). All are highly walkable.

The circle also includes our Children’s Museum (WOW), Maritime Museum (WAY COOL) and Museum of Contemporary Art (VERY CHIC). More on those after the slide show.

The Museums:

San Diego Children’s Museum

Literally across the street from the Conference hotel is the San Diego Children’s Museum. Personally, it’s one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen.
