Five Rules of Brand Ambassadorship

Posted by Paul Gillin in March 22nd 2010

The concept of “brand ambassadors” intrigues and delights business communicators. It’s a fact that people trust peers more than any other source, so what better marketing channel than one in which ordinary consumers do the marketing for you?

There have been hundreds of successful examples of companies enlisting customers to promote their products. My favorite is Fiskars, the Finnish maker of fine cutting tools that has used a private network of crafting enthusiasts called the Fiskateers (below) to focus product development, generate instant feedback and help sell products into specialty stores.

Dive In

Posted by Paul Gillin in June 6th 2008

Take some chances. Start by learning the landscape. The Web 2.0 directory, Go2Web20.net, lists nearly 2,500 social networks. You can’t possibly keep track of them all, so pick one and learn about it. Most networks share similar features, so get a sense of why people join them, how they use them and what are the networks’ strengths and weaknesses.

Sign up for Facebook or LinkedIn and connect to some friends who are already there. Spend an hour navigating the site and look at how other people are using it. Social networks aren’t all that complex. The value will be apparent to you pretty quickly.

Spend 15 minutes learning how to use Google Advanced Search. This will save you at least an hour a week, so the TIME investment is well worthwhile. More importantly, understanding the search will help you understand how people find information online. That is a key first step toward understanding the utility of social media.

When Getting Started with Social Media, the Biggest Sin Is Inaction

Posted by Paul Gillin in May 27th 2008

When I speak to public relations professionals about social media, I’m frequently greeted with dazed and fearful looks. Public relations professionals are witnessing a wholesale change in the world of media, and they tell me that they feel overwhelmed, confused and even afraid.

Well, relax. Yes, the past five years have witnessed the beginning of an epic transformation in the relationship between institutions and their constituents. Change of this magnitude creates waste and uncertainty as people struggle to define a new world order. That’s normal.

But there are huge benefits to change as well. We are privileged to play a part in creating new ground rules for the profession, and this can be enormously exciting. I remember my grandfather telling me about the experience of watching the first automobiles rumble down the streets of San Francisco. I was fascinated and a little jealous that he had the opportunity to witness such a turning point in history. In the media relations world, this moment is no less defining.

Remind Us Again Why You Aren’t Blogging

Posted by Paul Gillin in September 18th 2007

Businesses continue to tread carefully in the emerging global conversation known as the blogosphere. Ask public relations professionals why their companies aren’t more aggressive about blogging and chances are they will cite concerns about liability, negativity and losing control of the message. But ignoring the enormous opportunity of business blogging for these relatively minor risks is like choosing not to drive because you might hit a telephone pole. With a little planning and a clear sense of purpose, blogging is a simple and inexpensive way to reach customers and the media. Here are five scenarios where blogs make sense for business and don’t threaten anyone:
