$25K of Professional Development, Beaches & a Piggyback Ride (PRSA 2009 International Conference)

Posted by Casey DeLorme in October 9th 2009

Short post this round ’cause our Conference co-chairs, Marisa Vallbona, APR, and Denis Wolcott, do the talking in this delightful video. Definitely worth the five minutes for its sunny beaches and cuteness alone.

Highlights

  1. Announcing Bob Garfield, the Conference’s third keynote speaker. Bob writes for Advertising Age and co-hosts NPR’s “On the Media.” He just published a book arguing that the long-standing, two-way partnership between advertising and content is due for a “violent rejiggering.” Learn more at Bob’s own post to this blog, The Chaos Scenario.

The Chaos Scenario

Posted by Bob Garfield in October 1st 2009

I have the most wonderful news for you! Here it is: It is possible you aren’t completely ruined.

Might not sound like much, but it’s a lot more than I can tell people at, say, NBC, or Young & Rubicam. Or Comcast.

That’s because the forces of digital revolution, when not bestowing us with the wonders of YouTube and Craigslist and EZ Pass, are extremely busy destroying mass media and mass marketing. Yes, those two gigantic industries, so magnificently, munificently symbiotic for nearly four centuries, are disintegrating before our eyes.

“Community Organizing” and Public Relations: How to Build Face-to-face Communications

Posted by Michael Smith in September 28th 2009

The first job President Barack Obama had out of college was community organizer for labor unions and other civic groups on the south side of Chicago.

President Obama used grassroots community organization techniques — Saul Alinsky-style organizing tactics – for union votes, neighborhood improvement and for lobbying city hall in Chicago. Most of these efforts involved “turning people out”: whether at the union hall, the church steps or the polling place. Delivering people to precincts is what David Axelrod, now the president’s chief democratic policy strategist, does best.

Interviewing With The Media? Prepare Your TV Comments in Advance

Posted by TJ Walker in May 29th 2009

Media trainers often tell their clients to prepare simple three-part messages before going in front of a TV camera for media interviews. (I give the same advice.) In part, this is good advice for any media interview, whether it is TV, radio or print. But it is especially good advice for TV because there are so many nerve-racking things that can go on at a TV station or television network to make you lose your concentration. And if you can’t concentrate, you can’t think clearly. Hence, dumb things can come out of your mouth when the camera starts rolling.

A couple of years ago I was asked to be a guest expert on “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel to critique then President Bush’s body language during his meetings with French President Chirac. I’ve been in many a green room so I knew to expect the unexpected.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz on the Importance of Communication

Posted by Kami Watson Huyse in November 6th 2008

During the PRSA 2008 International Conference, Bob Lutz, Chairman of GM took some time out to talk with me about the importance of corporate communication.

He talks about the primary role of communications being to get the truth out, to erase misperceptions and sometimes to let the media know why you can’t talk, such as in times like these when General Motors is in discussions with the government.

He also talked about the importance of social media channels, like the GM Fastlane Blog, where the company can get out an unfiltered message.  Moreover, they can explain the truth and why that the company believes it is the truth.
