Stoker and Rawlins Continuum of Accountability

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 18th 2010

Dr. Kevin Stoker, APR of Texas Tech University and Dr. Brad Rawlins of Brigham Young University presented their work developing a continuum of accountability during the Public Relations Research Showcase Presentations round-robin session at the 2010 PRSA International Conference.

They propose 3 types of accountability, from lowest to highest:

  1. Direct Accountability
  2. Social Accountability
  3. Ideal Accountability

In direct accountability the organization and its stakeholders are accountable to one another, though it is more often looked at in terms of how well the organization serves its stakeholders. An example of direct accountability occur when the organization responds directly to a customer complaint. Today we see high levels of this occurring through technology, such as Southwest Airlines Twitter account where the airline responds to complaints tweeted by delayed or otherwise inconvenience customers.

What Was the Best Lesson You Learned from Your Professor?

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 17th 2010

Coming to Conference is about extending one’s excellence in practice. We hear sea stories from our colleagues about what worked, what didn’t and we get a chance to learn about the latest trends in public relations.

But some of those little gems of lessons we learned happened a long, long time ago on a college campus in a land far, far away. Some of the most important lessons of practice we learned came from our PR professors.

In honor of Besty Plank, the first female PRSA president and a champion of education efforts, we asked attendees the recount the best lesson they learned from their PR professors.

Tweet Bites: An Interview With Jason Baer

Posted by Jason Baer in April 21st 2010

As a lead up to the PRSA Counselors Academy Conference, social media expert Jay Baer (@jaybaer) was interviewed Twitter-style, by Counselors Academy member Bob Reed (@RAReed).  Here’s a recap of their conversation on how PR agencies need to think about the practice of social and digital media.

@RAReed: We’re transitioning from thinking and talking about social media to doing and measuring its effect. What are agencies getting right?

  • @jaybaer: Social media is so all encompassing that it’s lost meaning to say that you’re good at social media. There are so many facets to it now.

The Business Case for Public Relations: Understanding the Value of Public Relations

Posted by Michael Cherenson in November 6th 2009

More so than ever before, the perception and comprehension of public relations are suffering. At the same time, public relations is more vital than ever before, given the explosion of consumer engagement through new and social media, the collapse of reputation and trust in major institutions, and the evolving needs and concerns of corporate CEOs. To foster more accurate and better-informed internal and external perceptions of public relations’ roles, outcomes and value, PRSA is spearheading “The Business Case for Public Relations™,” an industry advocacy campaign aimed at changing attitudes and driving industry acceptance and growth.
