Having recently graduated from Northeastern University, I was excited when I was asked to attend the 2011 International Conference in Orlando, Fla. I have done internships in the past and gone to a few client events, but the idea of working at a PRSA event with hundreds of PR pros is exciting. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to network with top professionals from all over the world at the opening night party and even luckier to get to hear keynoters and sessions presenters speak.

I am from Detroit. I love Detroit. I am proud that we hosted this year’s PRSA 2008 International Conference. After over a year of anticipation, I can honestly say that it surpassed my expectations. Being that I was a member of the PRSSA 2008 National Conference: Driven to Distinction planning committee, it may seem somewhat out of place to think that way, but for any student planning an event of this magnitude, it is impossible to imagine the outcome.
Out of all the events planned for the Conference, I must say I was looking forward to the PRSA opening night reception the most. For some it was the excitement of the band, and for others the food, but for me it was the ability to stand next to the professionals that I one day hope to be. Each person I spoke to was inviting and excited for the opportunity that this event presented. Granted I loved the band and the food, but most of all I loved the networking. A while back when I was researching joining PRSSA I found this on the Web site: “In 1968, 20 years after its own establishment, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) founded the Public Relations Student Society of America. The declared purpose of PRSSA is to cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and professional public relations practitioners.” After much reflection I believe this event, and for that matter this Conference, encompassed all that our professional and student societies have been striving for. As I walked from place to place during this event I saw students and professionals engaged in conversation and exchanging laughs as though they had known one another for years.
He talks about the primary role of communications being to get the truth out, to erase misperceptions and sometimes to let the media know why you can’t talk, such as in times like these when General Motors is in discussions with the government.
He also talked about the importance of social media channels, like the GM Fastlane Blog, where the company can get out an unfiltered message. Moreover, they can explain the truth and why that the company believes it is the truth.
Here in Detroit, PR professionals are back to the daily grind, sitting down to desks in the city and suburbs, taking the information and knowledge gleaned at PRSA’s 2008 International Conference and putting it to work.
It’s not every day that our city plays host to so many dynamic and influential industry leaders, so at the Eisbrenner office, I’m pulling together some of my own web-related thoughts from the conference to share with the folks who couldn’t make it downtown.
Social media is here to stay.
You knew I was going to say it, didn’t you? Blogs, social networking sites, forums, video sharing . . . users are blogging at an exponential rate and as PR professionals, it’s our job to decipher which of these reach our audiences and the value they provide.
