Ethics Month Is Over; What Do You Plan to Do About It?

Posted by Ann Subervi in October 6th 2009

September brought so many wonderful things. The kids were back to school, the weather turned a bit cooler, and according to PRSA, it was ethics month. Ideally, it was a time for us to focus on the ethical aspects of our industry, our respective organizations and, perhaps, ourselves.

If you read Public Relations Tactics, PR Week, PR News, or any other industry publication, you no doubt noticed a laser-like focus on ethics last month. The question is: beyond increased awareness, is any of this moving us to action this month and beyond?

Craig Newmark Interview Talks Shop

Posted by Kami Watson Huyse in October 27th 2008

We had an opportunity to interview Craig Newmark and get some insight about how Craigslist works with the community, the key takeaway was that “people (Craigslist users) are trustworthy.”

Craig gave his three-part strategy for the success of Craigslist:

  • Technology: We have open source, lots of servers and keep it simple
  • Corporate: We keep the structure as small as possible so that management doesn’t lose touch
  • Community: We give lots of power over our site to the commmunity, we trust them and allow them to police the service

What I Learned From a Guy Named Bateman

Posted by Jennifer Ecclestone in October 20th 2008

Three years ago, as a more timid young public relations star just starting to spread my wings, I received an opportunity that changed my professional life. I almost missed out on this opportunity because of the fear I felt having very little experience in public relations at that time in my life. More of a fluke than anything, I was given the chance to lead the 2006 Bateman Case Study Competition at my alma mater, Michigan State University. I was scared, excited, overwhelmed and intrigued all at the same time. I wondered why the Executive Board of our Chapter had so much faith in me and if I could really handle this job.

Mistakes were made, but more importantly, lessons were learned. The mistakes I made during that campaign helped me learn more about the field of public relations and, while at the time I thought my short-lived career in public relations was over, it was really just beginning.
