Stoker and Rawlins Continuum of Accountability

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 18th 2010

Dr. Kevin Stoker, APR of Texas Tech University and Dr. Brad Rawlins of Brigham Young University presented their work developing a continuum of accountability during the Public Relations Research Showcase Presentations round-robin session at the 2010 PRSA International Conference.

They propose 3 types of accountability, from lowest to highest:

  1. Direct Accountability
  2. Social Accountability
  3. Ideal Accountability

In direct accountability the organization and its stakeholders are accountable to one another, though it is more often looked at in terms of how well the organization serves its stakeholders. An example of direct accountability occur when the organization responds directly to a customer complaint. Today we see high levels of this occurring through technology, such as Southwest Airlines Twitter account where the airline responds to complaints tweeted by delayed or otherwise inconvenience customers.

Pull Stunts Like That and Word Spreads Fast …

Posted by Marisa Vallbona in June 2nd 2010

I’ve served as ethics officer of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) San Diego Chapter for the past five years. During that time, I’ve received numerous phone calls, e-mails and heard countless complaints from colleagues “ratting out” other colleagues about unethical behavior. They want the bad apple kicked out of PRSA or barred from practicing public relations altogether. Frankly, after hearing some of their stories, I don’t blame them. I want that too!

The problem is that the re-written PRSA Code of Ethics is not intended to be enforced.

You read that right. It’s no longer intended to be enforced.

What Does Ethics Have To Do With Social Media Anyway?

Posted by Sara Meaney in November 12th 2009
Emmanuel Tchividjian

Emmanuel Tchividjian

Moderator: Emmanuel Tchividjian, senior vice president and chief ethics officer, Ruder Finn

Panelists:

  1. Bill Sailer, senior vice president, legal counsel, Qualcomm, Inc.
  2. Andrea Kates, founder, Business Genome.
  3. Tom Chernaik, principal, DigComm, Cmp.ly

Of all the sessions I attended at the PRSA 2009 International Conference, this was the most conversational and engaging in terms of audience participation and unscripted dialogue. Emmanuel Tchividjian did a great job moderating the diverse perspectives from three very different professionals, and incorporated the spirit of the topic into his conversational format and open dialogue between the audience and the panelists. Further, his role as senior vice president and chief ethics officer for Ruder Finn lent a perspective of scholarly, almost Socratic moderation of a rather rhetorical discussion, as ethics can often be.

Whistleblower to PRSA: “I Was Ashamed”

Posted by Dave Armon in November 9th 2009

Wendell Potter, APR testifiesIn an extraordinarily personal account of confronting his personal demons, a former senior insurance industry executive today urged public relations pros to put ethics ahead of personal gain.

Wendell Potter, APR, told attendees at the Public Relations Society of America’s annual International Conference that the ethics lessons he learned from a college professor and mentor ultimately triumphed, catapulting him into the role of whistleblower against an industry battling insurance reform.

“I think I lost my moral compass along the way,” said Potter, who testified against the HMO industry before the U.S. Senate in June. “I often was ashamed, quite frankly, about what I was doing.”

What Does Ethics Have to do With Social Media Anyway?

Posted by Emmanuel Tchividjian in October 20th 2009

The principles and values in ethics are both universal and timeless. However, the applications of ethics change with time as societies evolve. How do we apply the basic ethics principles in the world of the e-mail, Internet, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others? What is the difference between ethics in the real world and ethics in the virtual world? I see three major differences.

Speed. Things happen very fast in the virtual world. One click that will take less than one second
can cause irreparable damage, or even send you to jail!
