Sitting at home and living a bit like we’re back in the 1800′s, I was thinking how New York is going to have to reinvent itself after everything is back up and running. Battery Park will need to be better protected, the subways have to be strengthened and any shoreline areas need to prepare for a weather system that is changed forever.

Round Robin Resume Revising: It Works!

After helping two friends revise their resume recently, I realized how much I’ve learned through osmosis of managing PRSA Jobcenter for five years. I’ve had the benefit of meeting many insightful recruiters and asking them advice on behalf of our job seekers.

While there’s no “perfect formula” for revising a resume, here’s some advice and strategies I’ve obtained with a little help from my friends.

12 Trends to Watch: 2012 Public Relations Forecast #PRin2012

With thoughts (and client budgets) turning to the New Year, PRSA continues our tradition of an annual PR industry forecast. This year, we feature contributions from 12 creative thinkers in public relations. We asked for insight into trends they believe will fundamentally change the PR industry in 2012.

Below is a compilation of their thoughts. Starting Jan. 3, 2012, and running for 12 consecutive business days, PRSAY will publish each trend as a full blog post.

Public Relations Job Search Checklist

Public relations and communications job seeker benefits, including career resources like this Job Search Checklist, are available though the PRSA JobCenter.


Preliminaries

  • Resume: Create a simple one that could be easily modified.
  • Prepare samples: Have them ready to send by email or bring with you on disk or flash drive.
  • Prepare cover letters: Proofread carefully when sending so as to match content with receiver.
  • References: Figure out who your references will be and let them know you’ll be using them.

Keep it Going

  • Begin building your own personal brand by jazzing up your profiles, tweeting and participating in online discussions.
  • Check PRSA Jobcenter regularly, as well as other job sites.
  • Contact public relations recruiters.
  • Attend PRSA conferences and other trade events. Talk to people and make friends.
  • Get your first and second interview wardrobe ready.
  • Drill answering tough interview questions with your friends.
