7 Things About Social Media That College Won’t Teach You

I talk a lot about the need to do a better job of integrating social media into the world of higher education. That’s why when my alma mater asked me to speak at their annual Communication Week this year, I jumped at the opportunity. Because these students are already learning the basics of social media in their core communication classes, I didn’t want to do yet another Social Media 101 type presentation. Instead, I wanted to help them understand that even though they may learn what Twitter is, how to use it, and some case studies, there’s nothing like doing it in the real world. That’s why I gave a presentation titled “The 7 Things About Social Media That You’re Not Going to Learn in College.”

Here’s the presentation I gave, with the key takeaways below:

Pick Your Niche Before You Launch Your Firm

Posted by Joan Gladstone in August 25th 2011

Contemplating starting your own public relations firm or solo consulting practice? One of the first questions to ask yourself is, “What will I offer to clients?” To set a course for success, select your specialization. Here’s a quick FAQ:

1. Won’t picking a niche limit me?

Not at all. The narrower your niche, the higher the demand for your services. The day of the PR generalist is gone. The greater your expertise in a particular field, the more clients will value you and the less competition you will have. Remember, as you grow your firm, you can always add new niches.

Keeping Spirits Up in a Down Job Market

Posted by Ann Willets in August 14th 2011

Q: My job search is entering its eighth month. What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do differently?

A:  It’s understandable for you to start getting down on yourself — searching for a job in this market can quickly become demoralizing. As the months pass, people who are unemployed tend to become demoralized and their self-esteem suffers.

That job starts with self-care, both physical and psychological. It’s hard, but you can’t lose your self confidence or your sense of what you do well — it will come across in interviews and interactions.

You can’t lose sight of why you believe that.

Does Your Power Style Support Your Job Search?

Posted by Jason Woodward in July 29th 2011

You have an impressive track record and a healthy list of contacts, but people with less experience are getting the jobs you want. What’s the problem?

According to Maggie Craddock, president and founder of Workplace Relationships, it might be the power style that you display when you interview.

“In a competitive job market, understanding how your power style shapes the impression you make on prospective employers is as important as spellchecking your résumé,” she wrote in a blog post for the Harvard Business Review. “Fortunately, it’s something you can change.”

Craddock said that most people exhibit a blend of at least two of these four core power styles:
