Perk for 2012: Access to Free Online Public Relations Training for PRSA Members

Posted by Natalia A. Flores, APR in January 10th 2012

As is customary at the start of a new year, many communications professionals are seeking ways to stay current with the latest trends for the upcoming year and yearning for professional development opportunities to further their skill set. I am no exception. But the task can be a bit daunting, stressful and, let’s be honest, usually comes with a price tag.

So for 2012, in addition to the plethora of professional development that cost moola (and are well worth it), like luncheons, workshops, conferences, etc., I’m excited about public relations training that is now FREE.

PRSA members now have access to more than 50 free live and on-demand online training webinars ($200 value each). No need to rush to a workshop. No need to request additional professional development funding in my budget. No need to pick one topic over another.

It’s not sexy; it’s not fun. But, oh, so necessary. We’re talking key message development. With repeated use, such statements serve as the foundation of your branding/marketing efforts and should be reflected in all written and spoken communications.

Not a believer? Consider what business guru Tom Peters says: “In a competitive environment, only those who have a strong, unified message, who create and sell quality and value, will survive.”

So what are key messages? You can describe them as:

What Does Tweaking Cost Your Company?

Posted by Ann Wylie in January 29th 2010

Develop a business case for reining in approvals.

First there was “DBT,” or “Death by Tweakage”: When a brochure or newsletter “fails due to unnecessary tinkering or too many last-minute revisions.” (BuzzWhack.com)

Then came “nanomanagers”:  “Bosses who have taken micromanaging to a whole new level of  nitpicking.” (BuzzWhack.com)

Then it was “death by redlining”: “Redlined documents [are] like a theatre director giving line readings to actor[s] rather than helping them explore the character and give a stronger performance …‘when you say this line, raise your right eyebrow.’” (Matthew Stibbe, writer-in-chief for Articulate Marketing)

Community Relationships: Best Practices for Stronger Relationships

Posted by James Lukaszewski in January 15th 2010

One of the more disturbing trends I see in public relations practice, especially in the community relationship building arena, is the over dependence on social media tactics and techniques. To management, PR people seem obsessed with these new techniques. Even managers know that there are many tougher public relations challenges then sitting at a desk pinging people (many of whom you don’t really know) about things they’ve introduced into the conversation.

Because so many members of our profession are captivated and distracted by this new tactical approach to communication, some of the more critical ingredients to building, maintaining and repairing community relationships are being ignored or belittled at best, and minimized at worst.

Readers Want Less

Posted by Ann Wylie in December 3rd 2009

Establish copy length limits

“Brevity is the sister of talent.”
— Anton Chekhov, Russian playwright

Size does matter. All things else being equal, your readers would rather read a short piece than a long piece.

In writing — as in eating, imbibing, reality TV viewing and so much else in life — it’s good to set limits. In other words, establish an appropriate length limit for each piece you write. Here are some ideas for inspiration:
