Social Media Rules for Rush Hour?

Posted by Richard Teplitsky in October 19th 2010

One of the modern benefits that arise when well-connected public relations professionals congregate is our thirst for reporting pertinent information on the proceedings   most frequently delivered via social media. What has amazed me in recent years when attending the PRSA 2010 International Conference: Powering PRogress (and other recent PRSA-sponsored events) is the volume of virtual participants who aren’t onsite.

Those following the event hash tag (#prsa_ic) are absolutely fervent with commenting, debating and retweeting posts that are originating from the gathering. In fact, I’ve noticed so many active event hash tag followers, it’s actually hard to determine if they are here in person or if they are participating remotely. And this two-way dialogue and sharing of information and education is a wonderful endorsement of the power of the “global village network” that the Internet has truly become.

PRSSA Inaugural Ball Awards Ceremony

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 19th 2010

A professor’s outlook on her student’s work can sometimes dull with the daily wear and tear as we grade press releases, critique newsletter design and help future practitioners understand how to properly deploy a survey, among other things.

But there are moments when in a wave it all washes over and one can’t help but marvel at how much these future practitioners can do with a little direction and a lot of creativity and drive.

Wow. And I mean wow.

Katie Paine’s 3 Favorite Metrics

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 19th 2010

When you see Katie Paine is going to be on a panel to discuss evaluation, you know you’re going to get the real deal. Katie Paine is considered one of the true leaders of public relations measurement. Heck, she literally wrote the book on measuring public relationships!

So before she started her Tuesday afternoon presentation about “Reputation, Employee Engagement and Other Measures of PR Value,” I cornered her to talk numbers.

Katie Paine rattled off her 3 favorite metrics in this video in a single take without hesitation:

  1. Share of desirable conversation as compared with competitors

Annual Grunig Lecture: Remembering the “Relationship” in PR

Posted by Philip Volmar in October 19th 2010

Dr. Larissa Grunig and her husband, Dr. James Grunig, lectured about the importance of measuring the relationship in PR at the Third Annual Grunig Lecture.

“Grunig” is a name I saw in textbooks when I took my PR prerequisite courses. The name is legend, synonymous with PR research, excellence and theory.

So when I saw that PRSA hosted an annual “Grunig Lecture” (let alone that the series is in its third year!), I positioned my time to attend the session.

Like a well-balanced communications team, Drs. Jim and Lauri Grunig taught us attendees about the importance of relationships in PR — not only through their research, but also through their example.

POLITICO’s Jim VandeHei Offers Advice to Marketers

Posted by Ashley Walters in October 18th 2010

Jim VandeHei, executive editor and co-founder of POLITICO, swayed a crowd of more than 3,000 public relations professionals during his keynote at the annual PRSA International Conference. Based on his experience (working at both The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post ) and nationally-known success withPOLITICO, VandeHei offers some advice to marketers across all categories, politically affiliated or not.

  1. Create premium content — If you want to develop a loyal following, you must produce compelling (timely and relevant) content and make it easy to obtain. Always put your content first and then find a platform to share it.
