Coombs and Holladay Discuss the Kindle Crisis

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 18th 2010

Timothy Coombs and Sherry Holladay, both of the University of Central Florida, presented their case study content analysis of what they called the Kindle crisis from summer 2009.

Using a quantitative content analysis of postings published within an established Kindle community, the researchers looked at items published in the forum over a 2-day period that discussed the CEO’s very direct and unorthodox apology for their misstep.

The scholars classified each post as to whether the post noted the author owned a Kindle (indicated ownership, indicated was not an owner, did not mention ownership) and impact to behavioral intention (said the apology would change behavior, said apology would not change behavior, did not indicate any behavior change based on apology), among other variables.

Welcome to Washington — PR Capital of the World

Posted by Michael Smith in October 16th 2010

As a native Washingtonian, 25-year veteran of its largest agencies and former association executive on Capitol  Hill, let me be among the first to welcome PRSA International to Washington, D.C.

There was once a sign at Reagan National Airport that said: “Welcome to the Most Powerful City in the World.” So access to power becomes the currency of many of our clients!

PRSA-NCC is among the largest Chapters. Public relations practitioners really network here and try to help one another in the profession. We become friends and friendly competitors. I hope PRSA attendees can feel the vibe and maybe absorb what makes our city so great. We’re all political junkies, many are service oriented at associations and nonprofits, some are K Street killers.

Sanity-Check: Work-Life Balance as an Independent PR Practitioner

Posted by Sean Williams in July 9th 2010

In the past couple of years, many public relations pros have started their own businesses, sometimes fulfilling a long-dreamed fantasy and sometimes in response to a work-life change. There’s no doubt that we solo PR types have more flexibility than our corporate and agency colleagues, but the shift brings its own set of challenges to the work-life balance we all need.

Here are five tips to help you stay sane — especially if you’re solo.

Sticky Messaging for the Media

Posted by Kami Watson Huyse in October 28th 2008

Putting together a message about your company, idea, product or brand that rises above the clutter is getting harder all of the time.

Andrew Gilman is president and CEO for CommCore Consulting Group took on the task of teaching communicators at the PRSA International Conference how to create memorable quotes and sound bites. He outlined a process that will help pitches and interviews be more believable and “sticky.”

Three Steps to Building a Sticky Sound Bite
