What is PR? An Updated Definition for Public Relations

Posted by Rosanna Fiske in November 21st 2011

Ask any public relations professional to name the question they get most often and, inevitably, it comes down to “What is PR?”

You can hardly go into any new business meeting or grab coffee with a friend without hearing the question. For a profession in which businesses spend billions of dollars on our services, there is remarkably little understanding of what we do.

Recent discussions, blog posts, tweets and mainstream articles paint the following picture:

  • Public relations professionals (and, thus, the audiences we serve) continue to struggle with this question;
  • Existing definitions are not sufficient; and
  • No one definition is considered the de facto industry definition.

My guess is you can relate to this, based on your own experiences.

PRSA has been listening to and engaging in many of these conversations, and after careful consideration, we have come to the conclusion it’s time to do something.

Making Speeches Stick with Social Media

Posted by Philip Volmar in October 20th 2010

Ian Griffin says that social media is changing the medium of the speech from one-way to two-way communication.

With all the buzz surrounding social media, it seems that speechwriting may be becoming a “lost art” in the PR trade today. Our profession seems to have gone from authoring 14-minute speeches to typing 140-character tweets for our clients.

Or has it?

Ian Griffin (@cheshirelad), a freelance speechwriter, told us otherwise in his PD session on “Speechwriting in the Age of Social Media: Magnifying the Impact of a Speech.”

PRSA Conference After Hours: #SoloPR

Posted by Lynn Anne Miller in October 18th 2010

What happens when thousands of  PRSA attendees are released from a busy day of conferencing out into the gorgeous DC evening?  They split up into scores of small interest groups, to tweet, chat, eat, drink and talk shop.

I joined about thirty PR professionals from DC and around the nation at the behest of the inimitable Kellye Crane, principal of Crane Communications, but better known to the twitterati as @KellyeCrane, the gracious hostess and savvy PR guru behind  SoloPRPro. A resource to those already running solo practices, as well as to those who dream about running away from Big Agency and Big Company Life, Kellye has helped thousands of PR practitioners through her SoloPrPro website, LinkedIn Group, FaceBook page and weekly #SoloPR chats.

What Was the Best Lesson You Learned from Your Professor?

Posted by Kaye Sweetser in October 17th 2010

Coming to Conference is about extending one’s excellence in practice. We hear sea stories from our colleagues about what worked, what didn’t and we get a chance to learn about the latest trends in public relations.

But some of those little gems of lessons we learned happened a long, long time ago on a college campus in a land far, far away. Some of the most important lessons of practice we learned came from our PR professors.

In honor of Besty Plank, the first female PRSA president and a champion of education efforts, we asked attendees the recount the best lesson they learned from their PR professors.

Foursquare for PR: Testing Out the Strategy

Posted by Sherrie Bakshi in July 14th 2010

I just started playing with Foursquare™, the geo-based social networking website (SN) that seems to be generating lots of attention these days. For certain industries, I understand the advantages of having a foursquare strategy. Venues, including restaurants, retailers and hotels, can not only gain publicity through this SN site, but can incorporate it into their overall listening strategies (a critical component of their social networking strategies). But, do we expect foursquare to be as popular as Facebook? Also, how can other industries incorporate a foursquare strategy into their outreach?
